Dr Andreas Papatheodorou

Full Professor of Industrial and Spatial Economics

Dr Andreas Papatheodorou is Full Professor of Industrial and Spatial Economics with emphasis on Tourism, and Head of the Department of Tourism Economics and Management (TODIT) at the University of the Aegean. He also directs the Joint Postgraduate Programme MBA in Air Transport Management (MATBA) and the Laboratory of Tourism Transport, Infrastructure and Destination Development (ETMYAP) at the University of the Aegean. He is Coordinator and member of the teaching staff for module DTE50 at the Hellenic Open University, and Adjunct Professor at the School of Aviation of the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. He also collaborates on teaching with the French National School of Civil Aviation (ENAC) and the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences (FRA-UAS) in Germany.

He holds a degree from the Athens University of Economics and Business and is a graduate of the University of Oxford (MPhil in Economics, DPhil in Economic Geography). He began his career as Lecturer in Tourism at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, where he worked from 2000 to 2005. In the academic year 2015-16 he served as Dean of the College of Hospitality and Tourism at the University of West London.

Professor Papatheodorou has authored more than 200 academic papers and presentations, mainly on the economic regulation and deregulation of air transport and its relationship with tourism development. His work has attracted approximately 7,000 citations internationally (Google Scholar). His name appears regularly in the Elsevier and Stanford University list of the top 2% of scientists worldwide (main field: Economics and Business; sub-field: Sport, Leisure and Tourism). Among other works, his book Aviation and Tourism has been very positively received, while Economics of Tourism has been translated from English into Chinese. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Air Transport Studies and Advisor to Annals of Tourism Research.

He has taken part in more than thirty international and national research and consultancy projects, in several as Principal Investigator, and served for many years as a full member of the Research Committee of the Special Account for Research Funds of the University of the Aegean. He chaired the Board of the Hellenic Aviation Society (2019-26) and is a member of the Executive Board of the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, the independent authority supervising the aviation market in Greece. He is a member of the Panel of Experts of the UN Tourism Barometer, speaks three foreign languages (English, French and German), and holds a diploma in Classical Guitar from the National Conservatory.
