Michalis Bekiaris was born in 1972 in Athens. He studied at Panteion University, from which he obtained a degree in public administration (1993) and a PhD in financial accounting (2001). He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce with a first-class accountant-tax expert license, while he is one of the first certified liquidators of the Athens Derivatives Exchange (CHPA, 1999).
Since 2003, he has been working in the Department of Business Administration of the University of the Aegean as well as in the two postgraduate programs of the department (MBA & MS Tourism) as a faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor. Since 2008 he has been teaching at the Hellenic Open University as a Collaborating Teaching Staff. In addition to his academic experience, he has worked for seven years (1997-2004) in a large Greek private bank, in the field of business financing and internal control, from where he left with the rank of Inspector, to join the University of the Aegean. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Intellectual Property Organization. His research interests, as a result of both his professional and research activities, revolve around Auditing and in particular internal control. He has participated in numerous national and international conferences on audit and accounting issues, while in 2010 he was President of the Organizing Committee at the 8th European Conference on Internal Audit and Corporate Governance.
