Vasilis Angelis

Emeritus Professor of Quantitative Methods

Vasilis Angelis is Emeritus Professor of Quantitative Methods at the Department of Business Administration of the University of the Aegean, where from 1987 to 2015 he taught a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. He holds a degree from the Department of Mathematics of the University of Athens, an MSc in Statistics and Operational Research from Aston University in Birmingham, and a PhD in Control Theory with applications to economic and social systems from the University of Warwick.

During his long tenure at the University of the Aegean he served, among other roles, as Director of the Laboratory of Quantitative Methods, Director of the MBA Programme, Head of the Department of Business Administration, Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee of the School of Business, Vice-Chair of the Board of the Property Development and Management Company of the University of the Aegean, member of the Dean’s Council of the School of Business, and member of the Senate of the University.

From 1979 to 1985 he worked at the Chalkis Shipyards and from 1985 to 2011 at the Agricultural Bank of Greece. Between 2001 and 2006 he taught as visiting professor on the MBA programme of the Athens University of Economics and Business. From 2001 to 2016 he taught at the Hellenic Open University as Adjunct Teaching Staff on the Quantitative Methods module, coordinating that module from 2005 to 2008. In the academic year 2015-2016 he taught as visiting professor on the postgraduate programme in Accounting, Finance and Management Science of the TEI of Epirus. From 2015 to 2023 he taught on the postgraduate programme “Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Tourism” at the University of West Attica, and since 2020 he has taught on the postgraduate programme “Strategic Management of Tourism Destinations and Hospitality Businesses” at the University of the Aegean. He has also worked as an organisational consultant for large companies and organisations and has taught at numerous executive training seminars.

He has written three books and university course materials for many subjects, and edited a collective volume of academic papers. He has successfully supervised one post-doctoral research project, fourteen doctoral theses and a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations. He has taken part in a large number of research projects, in many as Principal Investigator, and has published more than 50 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and more than 100 in peer-reviewed proceedings of international and national conferences. He is a reviewer for many academic journals and a member of numerous scientific societies and associations.

His current research interests include sustainable, resilient and inclusive development of cities and regions, with particular emphasis on island tourism destinations; the circular economy and its applications; urban-industrial symbiosis and the creation of symbiotic networks; smart cities; and artificial intelligence and its applications.
